Entry Title: " Tree Hotel, Harads"
, Sweden
Category: Professional, Build|Design
Designer(s): Tham & Videgard Arkitekter

Entry Description:

A shelter up in the trees; a lightweight aluminium structure hung around a tree trunk, a 44x4 meters box clad in mirrored glass. The exterior reflects the surroundings and the sky, creating a camouflaged refuge. The interior is all made of plywood and the windows give a 360 degree view of the surroundings.
The construction also alludes to how man relates to nature, how we use high tech materials and products when exploring remote places in harsh climates (Gore-tex, Kevlar, composite materials, light weight tents etc).
The functions included provide for a living for two people; a double bed, a small bath room, a living room and a roof terrace. Access to the cabin is by a rope bridge connected to the next tree.
To prevent birds colliding with the reflective glass, a transparent ultraviolet colour is laminated into the glass panes which are visible for birds only.

About the Company:

Tham & Videgrd Arkitekter is a progressive and contemporary practice that focuses on architecture and design from large scale urban planning through to buildings, interiors and objects.
The practice objective is to create distinct and relevant architecture with the starting point resting within the unique context and specific conditions of the individual project. Taking an active approach, the office is involved throughout the whole process, from developing the early sketch to the on-site supervision. Commissions include public, commercial and private clients in Sweden and abroad.
The practice approach to architecture is inclusive; with practical, theoretical, social and environmental issues analysed and integrated within the process. When required and relevant the office involves a network of multidisciplinary external consultants. This use of complementing resources ensures that all projects address the right challenges, in order to make the most of the opportunities that each represent.
Within the office architects combine straight forward solutions with extensive research. The method of work encourages innovative thinking to drive the development of the project, which in turn facilitates the subsequent realization within the logics of efficient contemporary production.
