Entry Description:
HASSELL Studio, Shanghai
HASSELL's studio in Shanghai is located in a former motorcycle factory on the Southern Bund of the Huangpu River, the city's historic commerce waterway. The refurbished building is an open space loft that spans across 2,300 square metres and houses more than 150 staff. The studio is set 20 metres back from the west bank of the river in a building cluster and the air is filled with the sound of fog horns from passing coal barges and ferries in the afternoon.
Breathing new life and purpose into an old space with a distinctive character is something that HASELL believes in. The design firm had previously converted a bread factory to create its Brisbane studio, while its Melbourne office was formerly a disused clothing plant. Sustainability design elements and measures were incorporated in those rejuvenations.
HASSELL Shanghai studio received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold standard for commercial interiors in 2009 from the U.S. Green Building Council. This LEED certification is awarded to projects that fulfill key sustainable features including site selection to minimize environmental impact, good building fabric insulation and the use of natural daylight.
For instance, the use of glass panels on the roof of the HASSELL Shanghai studio introduces natural light during the day and amplifies the sense of spaciousness of the walkway. Natural lighting also contributes to energy savings and allows HASSELL to plant bamboo indoors, which is closely associated with local culture and augments a healthy working environment.
The studio's lighting is also designed with low power density, and smart sensors that adjusts levels according to zones, timing, and motion detection.
HASSELL also incorporates bicycle storage space and shower rooms to encourage staff to cycle to and from work -- encouraging a healthy lifestyle while at the same time minimizing the impact on the environment through reducing automobile use. An attic space is used as an indoor gym with six stationary bicycles. Spinning classes are held every Tuesdays and Thursdays after-hours for staff.
Based on the concepts of connectivity, clarity and community, the HASSELL Shanghai workplace was created to be a positive and healthy environment to encourage creativity and communication.
Key Sustainable Features of HASSELL Shanghai Studio:
1. Considered site selection
The studio is located in a developed urban area with existing infrastructure, which protects green field sites, preserves habitat and natural resources. It is well connected to public transportation, which can reduce pollution and land development impacts from automobile use. The studio is designed with bicycle storage spaces and shower rooms to encourage staff to cycle to work; this will also reduce pollution and land development impacts from automobile use.
2. Good building fabric insulation
Base building's low Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) roof helped reduce the studio's Heat Island Effect (HIE). Good insulation reduces cooling and heating demand therefore reduces energy use.
3. Natural day lighting
The use of glass panels on the roof to introduce natural day lighting and created spaciousness on the walkway. Natural lighting contributes to lighting energy saving and financial benefits, it also allows HASSELL to plant bamboo indoor, emphasizing local culture and provide good indoor environment for healthy working environment.
4. Efficient lighting design and control system
The studio's lighting is designed with low power density; lighting control comes with zoning, timing, light sensor control and motion detector control.
5. Space and energy Efficient Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning System (HVAC)
The studio comes with space efficient HVAC plant and equipment, high Coefficient of Performance (COP) air cooled reversed cycle Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) System, coupled with a micro processor based central controller for optimum operation and multiple indoor Fan Coil Units for zoned control for thermal comfort and energy optimization.
6. Enhanced outdoor air supply and CO2 monitoring system for good indoor air quality
7. 30 % energy saving compared to baseline building
8. 30 % water saving compared to baseline building.
In order to save water, water fittings and fixture's flow and flush rate reduction. Choice of water efficiency plant, for landscaping in the office, native and low-density planted bamboo was chosen, this significantly reduces the landscaping water usage.
9. Heat recovery system for hot water heating.
Rejected heat from computer server room is recovered for hot water heating therefore provides energy saving and reduces heat island effect.
10. Low VOC material
Sustainability generally comprises three aspects' environmental, social and economic sustainability. The low volatile organic compounds (VOC) material contributes to environmental and social sustainability in this instance. Low VOC material reduces pollutants to the indoor environment.
11. Rapidly renewable material
The use of bamboo flooring reduces the use and depletion of finite as bamboo s a rapidly renewable material.
12. Construction waste management
During construction avoid sending waste to waste station and recycle and reuse where possible.
13. Energy Star equipments
Use of Energy star rated office equipment to reduce energy consumption
14. Green power
Use green power that reduces environmental impact.
