(Project Brief)
As part of our ongoing effort to spearhead an initiative with Sprint to adopt a sustainability strategy for packaging, DDW was asked to develop a unique sustainable package for Sprints first green phone (the Samsung Reclaim) to be made of 80% recyclable materials with 40% of outer shell made from corn-based bio-plastic. Typical conventional packaging in this category uses virgin paperboard with little to no post-consumer content, and printed with petroleum-based ink.

DDW has assisted Sprint in evolving their brand image and more recently in evaluating sustainable packaging strategies, is now prominently featured on their website and contributed to Sprint
earning the No.3 spot in Newsweeks 2011 Greenest Companies in America.

(Approach)
To improve the consumer experience and transition into responsible packaging we developed this eco-friendly structural and printing to highlight the new line of greener phones (devices). The visual iconography of natural settings provided strong brand differentiation for packaging, in-store merchandising and advertising.

(Effectiveness)
We improved recyclability of package by using 100% recyclable Kraft corrugated, use of water based adhesives and coatings, reducing ink coverage, replaced petroleum-based inks with soy-based inks, and replaced printed-paper users manual with online manual. To further enhance the positive environmental impact, and $2 of each sale was donated to The Nature Conservancy.
